If you've ever had to move a heavy object in your warehouse, you know how difficult it can be. Even if you have help, the process can be slow and cumbersome. But with Material Handling's manual pallet jacks, suddenly the task is much easier!

Manual Pallet Jack FAQ's

What is a manual pallet jack used for?

A manual pallet jack is a device that is used to move products of varying weights on casters. Essentially, this piece of equipment will allow the operator to roll goods using minimal physical exertion. Manual pallet jacks can be found in warehouses, manufacturing floors, or other production facilities where heavy loads are common fixtures. The device features two narrow trucks with forward-tilted rails on which product travels on casters.

So if you're looking for an easy way to move larger furniture items around your house or place of business with the minimal physical effort required then this is definitely one option worth considering!

How do you maneuver a manual pallet jack?

A manual pallet jack is moved by pulling it forward with one hand and lifting the levers with the other. Its use is very specific, for lifting and/or moving pallets in a warehouse setting, but since they're durable and don't require electricity to work, they're still widely used today.

Is it better to push or pull a pallet jack?

Pushing a manual pallet jack is better because it is less heavy and produces less strain on the body.

One of the reasons people think pulling a pallet jack is easier, even though it's more difficult to control, maybe that people underestimate how much force they need to push a manual pallet. It takes considerable strength just to have enough for a one-handed push, let alone two-handed. As well as this physical effort being needed, going further down the assembly line requires increased lower back support as you need to lean over all day long under load from other pieces of equipment such as an overhead crane or forklift which puts pressure on your back from crouching.

How are manual pallets jacks used?

The forklift can either be a power-pushed or a manually directed lift, and a manual pallet jack is directed by hand.

Manual pallet jacks are used in small spaces that have no room for the enormous structure of a forklift truck. Without the capacity to move cargo from one location to another, manual pallets would be pretty useless. The traditional way of transporting things around warehouses and building sites was with wheeled trolleys like the ones still seen at airports worldwide today, but as it went to go about these tasks on foot became more arduous and time-consuming.

Do you need training to use a manual pallet truck?

YES. In order to use a manual pallet truck, the user needs to have training and authorization from OSHA.

The OSHA standard for people who will be "operating" a manual pallet jack is 29 CFR 1917.50(a). OSHA defines a "jackman" as a worker who operates or assists in operating a hydraulic, electric, or another type of muscle-driven wheeled vehicle with one wheel in contact with the ground and principally designed for use in warehouses and manufacturing establishments for storing, moving, raising or lowering movable heavy objects such as furniture steels racks.

This includes any attachment mounted on this wheeled vehicle including but not limited to forklifts, handcarts, or hand trucks.

How much weight can I pull on a pallet jack?

There are a number of factors that affect the weight capacity of a manual pallet jack. Some include:

  • Size and surface area of the wheels
  • Maximum load rating for the fork blades (how strong they need to be)
  • The load's center of gravity relative to the wheels

Most manual pallet jacks can lift anywhere from 5,000 lbs. to 10,000 lbs.

The best thing to do is get in touch with your manufacturer or distributor and you will be able to get an accurate answer to this question.  You can contact us if you want more information.

How do you stop a pallet jack?

There are two easy ways to stop a manual pallet jack. You can block the wheels with a pallet stop, or you can put an obstacle in front of them so they can't go any further.
