The Best Self-Dumping Hoppers in 2026, Sized by Duty Class

Six forklift hoppers from 1/4 to 3 cubic yards — with a load-weight calculator so you buy the duty class your material actually needs.

Prices and stock on this page are pulled live from our inventory system — they reflect what you'd pay right now.

How we chose these picks

We organized this guide around the single spec buyers get wrong most often: duty class. Vestil's D-series comes in Light (2,000 lb), Medium (4,000 lb) and Heavy (6,000 lb) duty at every volume, and the correct class depends entirely on your material's bulk density — a cubic yard of cardboard weighs ~100 lbs, a cubic yard of steel turnings can weigh 3,000. All capacity, dimension and warranty figures below are manufacturer-published specs from our product database. All six picks are US-made steel hoppers we stock or factory-ship; the availability badges are live. No placement is paid.

A self-dumping hopper is the workhorse of warehouse waste handling: your forklift carries it to the dumpster, the operator releases the latch from the seat, the hopper rolls forward on its curved base, dumps, and self-returns upright. Nobody climbs, nobody shovels, nobody lifts.

The buying mistake we see weekly: choosing volume first and duty class as an afterthought. A 1-yard light-duty hopper is rated 2,000 lbs — completely fine for trash, dangerously undersized for metal chips. Use the calculator below with your real material, then match against the picks. Prices and stock are live from our inventory system.

Hopper load-weight calculator

Pick your material and a hopper size. We compute the weight of a completely full hopper from industry-typical bulk densities and tell you which duty class covers it. Densities are estimates — if the result lands near a class limit, weigh a real sample before you buy.

Best Overall

1. Vestil Steel Medium Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1 Cubic Yard 4000 Lb. Capacity Blue

by Vestil — Model D-100-MD

Vestil Steel Medium Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1 Cubic Yard 4000 Lb. Capacity Blue

Best for: general plant waste where trash gets heavy

The 1-cubic-yard, 4,000-lb Medium Duty D-100-MD is the spec we recommend when a buyer isn't sure: full pallet-scale volume with double the light-duty rating, so mixed loads with the odd dense item — broken pallets, banding, damp floor sweepings — never flirt with the limit. US-made steel, 42-9/16 x 61-1/8 in. footprint, 90-day parts warranty, and QuickShip-eligible so it ships in days.

Pros

  • 4,000 lb rating absorbs density surprises in mixed waste
  • Full 1-yard volume — fewer trips to the dumpster
  • US-made and QuickShip-eligible

Cons

  • Costs about 11% more than the LD version
  • Overkill if you truly only handle light trash

Best Value 1-Yard

2. Vestil Steel Light Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1 Cubic Yard 2000 Lb. Capacity Blue

by Vestil — Model D-100-LD

Vestil Steel Light Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1 Cubic Yard 2000 Lb. Capacity Blue

Best for: cardboard, packaging and light plant trash

If the calculator says your material stays comfortably under 2,000 lbs per yard — and for cardboard (~100 lb/yd³) and general trash (~250 lb/yd³) it will — the Light Duty D-100-LD buys the same 1-yard volume as our top pick for less money. Same US-made steel construction, same latch-and-roll mechanism, same footprint, lighter-gauge build.

Pros

  • Cheapest path to a full cubic yard
  • Trash and cardboard can't realistically overload it
  • Same mechanism and footprint as the MD/HD versions

Cons

  • 2,000 lb limit rules out metal scrap and masonry
  • Lighter gauge steel takes abuse less gracefully

Best for Heavy Scrap

3. Vestil Steel Heavy Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1 Cubic Yard 6000 Lb. Capacity Blue

by Vestil — Model D-100-HD

Vestil Steel Heavy Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1 Cubic Yard 6000 Lb. Capacity Blue

Best for: machine shops and metal fab waste

The Heavy Duty D-100-HD carries 6,000 lbs — the highest rating in the D-series — in the same 1-yard body. This is the hopper for steel turnings, castings, and demolition rubble, where a full yard genuinely weighs tons. Heavier-gauge steel throughout; check the live badge below, as HD units move in and out of backorder faster than the other classes.

Pros

  • 6,000 lb rating handles the densest common materials
  • Heaviest-gauge build in the 1-yard line
  • QuickShip-eligible when in stock

Cons

  • A full yard of steel chips can still exceed 6,000 lbs — do the math
  • Highest price of the 1-yard trio

Best Compact Heavy-Duty

4. Vestil Steel Heavy Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1/2 Cubic Yard 6000 Lb. Capacity Blue

by Vestil — Model D-50-HD

Vestil Steel Heavy Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1/2 Cubic Yard 6000 Lb. Capacity Blue

Best for: dense material in smaller batches

The smart answer for dense scrap: the 1/2-yard D-50-HD keeps the full 6,000-lb rating in a body a foot narrower than the 1-yard units (32-9/16 x 51-7/8 in.). Half a yard of steel turnings (~1,500 lbs by our estimate table) sits well inside the rating, and the smaller body is easier to position in cramped machine aisles. At about $920 it's also the least expensive HD unit in this guide.

Pros

  • Full 6,000 lb HD rating at the lowest HD price here
  • Compact body fits machine-shop aisles
  • Right-sized so dense loads stay in spec

Cons

  • Half the volume means more dump trips for light waste
  • Wrong choice for bulky, low-density trash

Best for Tight Spaces

5. Vestil Steel Light Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1/4 Cubic Yard 2000 Lb. Capacity Blue

by Vestil — Model D-25-LD

Vestil Steel Light Duty Self Dumping Hopper 1/4 Cubic Yard 2000 Lb. Capacity Blue

Best for: cell-level scrap collection beside machines

At 26 in. wide, the 1/4-yard D-25-LD parks beside a machine tool or workbench like a supersized bin — except a forklift empties it without anyone touching the contents. 2,000-lb light-duty rating, which on a quarter yard covers everything short of solid metal. It's the least expensive hopper in this guide and the one we suggest buying in multiples for point-of-waste collection.

Pros

  • 26 in. width fits where full-size hoppers can't
  • Lowest price in the guide — practical to deploy per work cell
  • 2,000 lbs on 1/4 yard covers most materials

Cons

  • Small volume — this is a point-of-use bin, not central collection
  • Not QuickShip-flagged; check the live availability badge

Best High-Volume

6. Vestil Steel Heavy Duty Self Dumping Hopper 3 Cubic Yard 6000 Lb. Capacity Blue

by Vestil — Model D-300-HD

Vestil Steel Heavy Duty Self Dumping Hopper 3 Cubic Yard 6000 Lb. Capacity Blue

Best for: central waste consolidation and bulky scrap

The 3-cubic-yard D-300-HD is the consolidation point: cell-level hoppers and hand bins get emptied into it, and it makes the dumpster trip once. 6,000-lb HD rating over an 81-3/4 x 68-5/8 in. body — note that's nearly 7 ft wide, so confirm door and aisle clearances, and remember 3 yards of anything denser than ~2,000 lb/yd³ will out-weigh the rating before it fills.

Pros

  • Triple volume slashes forklift round-trips
  • HD rating handles mixed heavy loads
  • Ideal consolidation partner for the smaller picks

Cons

  • Nearly 7 ft wide — verify clearances before ordering
  • Density math matters most at this size: 6,000 lbs arrives fast

How to spec a hopper in three steps

1. Weight before volume. Multiply your material's bulk density (lb/yd³) by hopper volume. That number must sit under the duty-class rating — 2,000 lbs for LD, 4,000 for MD, 6,000 for HD. 2. Check the forklift, not just the hopper. A full 1-yard HD hopper of dense scrap plus the hopper's own steel weight can approach or exceed a 5,000-lb truck's capacity at load center. 3. Measure your dumpster lip height. The hopper dumps forward and down — your forklift must raise the hopper's base above the container edge with room to rotate. All six picks here use the same latch-and-roll mechanism and carry Vestil's 90-day parts warranty; most are QuickShip-eligible, meaning days rather than weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do LD, MD and HD actually mean on these hoppers?

They're capacity ratings on the same basic design: Light Duty carries 2,000 lbs, Medium Duty 4,000 lbs, and Heavy Duty 6,000 lbs, in the same nominal volumes. The steel gauge and base construction get heavier as the rating climbs, which is why an HD hopper of the same volume costs more and weighs more.

How does the self-dumping mechanism work?

The hopper body sits on a curved cradle base, held upright by a latch. The forklift carries it by its fork pockets; at the dumpster, the operator pulls the release cable from the seat, the body rolls forward on the cradle and dumps, then gravity returns it upright and the latch re-engages. No one leaves the seat.

Do I need to secure the hopper to the forklift?

Yes — these hoppers include chains or lock pins that secure the fork pockets to the carriage so the hopper can't slide off the forks during travel or dumping. Using them is standard safe practice and takes seconds.

What if my material is heavier than 6,000 lbs per hopper-load?

Don't overfill a lower class — fill partially, or step down in volume. A 1/2-yard HD hopper full of steel turnings stays within rating; a 1-yard hopper of the same material may not. The calculator above does this math for you.
